Our story

True Tallow Company began with a simple desire to live more intentionally.

While in college, Kovan Drenth started paying closer attention to the ingredients he was putting on his body. After learning about beef tallow and its traditional use in skincare, he began making simple lotions at home using real, minimal ingredients.

At the same time, Josie Lock and her family were raising cattle on their farm, Lock Cattle Company, with a focus on responsible land stewardship and animal care. Their farm provided a clean, reliable source of high-quality beef tallow.

When Kovan and Josie met in 2024, they realized their paths naturally aligned. What started as a small experiment quickly became True Tallow Company.

Today, we handcraft our products in small batches with care, believing that simple ingredients, honest sourcing, and patience still matter.

Driven by passion

We believe skincare should be simple, honest, and made from ingredients you can actually trust.

Like many people, we grew frustrated with products filled with synthetic additives, harsh preservatives, and long ingredient lists that felt disconnected from nature. We wanted something different—skincare rooted in tradition, made from real ingredients, and crafted with intention.

Beef tallow has been used for generations to nourish and protect the skin. It’s rich, effective, and naturally compatible with the skin’s biology. For us, returning to tallow wasn’t about trends—it was about choosing what works and honoring the wisdom of the past.

At the heart of our work is stewardship. We believe we’re called to care well for our bodies, respect the animals and land that provide our ingredients, and make products with honesty and patience.

True Tallow Company exists because we wanted skincare we could stand behind—and share with others seeking a more natural way forward.

Our Journey

  • Kovan's first batch before True Tallow Company (December 2023)

  • We started our company with a logo and a name (January 2025)

  • Our first official batch was made (February 2025)

  • Our first instagram post (March/2025)

  • We put our products in Kelsey Lake Market and Dussel's Farm Market, Cassopolis, MI (March 2025)

  • We redesigned our product and reached 100 jars sold! (April 2025)

  • We launched our website (August 2025)
